Available literature data on the current state of natural ecosystems in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone (ChEZ) are analyzed by ACDI to assess the state of biodiversity in the Zone. Data on the diversity of the flora and fauna species (natural zone and structure of vegetation, diversity of animal species, their special characteristics, including rare/endangered species) are summarized. Trends in the status changes of the basic biodiversity components are identified. Main adverse impact factors for key components of biodiversity are analyzed and their causes are assessed. Main trends in the development of the ChEZ natural complexes are described, including the ones caused by chronic exposure effects in biota objects, forecasts for further evolution of the ecosystems under the conditions of radiation exposure are made.
ACDI together with its international partners aims to promote principles of Nature Based Solutions in addressing existing and emerging environmental challenges as well as Ecological Connectivity between different elements of human environment, such as urban and rural infrastructures, water resources, natural habitats, and soft mobility networks. ACDI conducts a scientific assessment of the knowledge that exists with regard to ecological connectivity and green infrastructure in the pan-European region. Identification of new ways to scale up ecological connectivity across different ecological systems on the European continent will offer a new formula of environmental governance and management of natural resources.
A Nature-based Solutions project is being developed for the capital city of Belgrade, involving creation of green spaces to improve air quality and improve residents’ mental and physical health, which is considered as a top development priority. The project for the urban setting will help create a new community in scarcely populated/abandoned neighborhoods by attracting new residents, while engaging them in establishing a new sense of place and community in currently largely overlooked areas. It will also be a significant step forward in contributing to climate change adaptation and mitigation.
Turkey’s Bodrum is a unique region in terms of landscape, water sources, vegetation, natural resources and history. At the same time, its present rapid development and a growing tourism sector could potentially damage its environment and have a negative impact on the local agriculture and local economy. In this regard, a Nature-based Solutions project is envisaged in Bodrum, starting as a pilot initiative with the potential to be replicated across the country.
